Break the Boy - Cream with a K
I’ll be honest, I have no idea how I stumbled upon Cream with a K, DIY indie project by Lee Tatlock. Probably during one of my nights where I stayed up scrolling endless hours on TikTok, starting to follow every indie artist that tells me they’re having a new song coming out or they’ve just written one and wanted to share it. Nevertheless, I’m very glad when I found this gem of a song the other night in my What’s New section of Spotify (the more artists you follow, the more new stuff you find - it’s so important to follow artists on your streaming platform!!).
Break the Boy sounds like the kind of song you’d hear in a late ‘90s/early 2000s movie in the background while the main character gets ready for the day, maybe sipping on a chai latte. The lo-fi instrumentals and dreamy guitars echoing throughout the song, plus the continuous drum breaks, are making the listener addicted to it. I’ve been listening to it on repeat for the past two hours while prepping this review and writing currently. I can’t get enough of the song and I’m not getting tired of it, I’ll be fine if this is the song I’m listening to for the rest of the day.
The lyric lines that made me gasp were:
But now I don’t it’s wise
to take the ribbon off your eyes
You’re so afraid you can’t decide
I know I’m empty but you’re dead inside
The words are really coming slow out of me with this review, the song keeps repeating for another round out of the endless times I played and played it. I feel like the song has two different meanings, almost like we’re supposed to listen between the lines. Like an Alfred Hitchcock psycho-thriller with a seductive butter-sweet voice being bundled up together. The music video portrays that feeling very well with the rather dark-toned colors together with the artist in the spotlight, smiling while the lyrics just barely slip through the lips.
Also worth a mention are the transitions between chorus and verses with the thunder-sounding like interval that makes you look out the window for a second to see if a storm is about to start.
Needless to say, this song is gonna count to my favorites I’ve discovered and reviewed this month. Please go check out Cream with a K’s other songs like Cider or her self-titled album from 2020.
