Dafna. If you’re on Tiktok, following Dafna is a must. If you don’t yet, you really miss something out. Her vibes are immaculate & legendary and how many times I got obsessed with the videos of her sitting in front of her computer (btw how stunning is that keyboard?!?) and teasing Always A Dream. Obviously, that song has already been out for almost three months and this Wednesday, January 19th, Dafna released another banger: We Jumped The Gun. One you can jump and scream to. One that describes your feelings about that guy so accurately that it hurts and maybe you’ll text the line I thought you’d be an album, you’re barely a song randomly at 2AM to him …
You can stream We Jumped The Gun everywhere and should!
First, read the interview of legend Dafna & moi.
Bonnie Orbison: First question first: introduce yourself a bit.
Dafna: Hello, I’m Dafna. I’m 21 years old and I’m from Boulder, Colorado.
BO: What’s been your musical journey?
Dafna: Before I sang, my parents put me into classical piano lessons when I was four years old. And then I just kept doing that. When I was like 10, or 11, I started writing songs and stuff more. Throughout high school, I was writing songs and playing them in coffee shops or talent shows, but I didn’t really know how to record or anything yet. After I graduated, I figured out how to record and produce my music on my own so then I started releasing when I was 17.
BO: I’m loving this. So at my age right now, you started producing?
Dafna: Yeah.
BO: What is the title of your new single?
Dafna: It’s We Jumped The Gun and it just came out January 19.
BO: Does the title have a special meaning?
Dafna: The original name for the song was actually going to be 4 Days because that was the length of the relationship. But on my album, I’m doing this thing where the first letters of the songs are writing out the title of the album, so it is like an acronym. I needed the W and I decided to call this song We Jumped The Gun.
BO: What inspired the track? What is the song about?
Dafna: It’s about my first ever boyfriend. I was really, really excited. And like any time I have an idea or whenever I’m inspired, I write it down in my journal. *flips through her journal* So at the beginning, anytime I had some sort of like lyric idea, I was like Oh, this is like something that I could write about this person and I would just write it down. That’s how I wrote the first part of the song and then very quickly after he asked me to be his girlfriend, like four days later, he was like Oh, nevermind! *flips more through her journal and shows me two pages of it* So on this page, I write all these nice things about him and like little love lyrics. And then the next page it goes to PSYCH!!!
BO: Uhh, this reminds me of the novel I am currently writing. I started to write it when I fell in love for the first time. Then he stood me up multiple times and now I have such a plot twist in it, it’s kinda really cool.
Dafna: Right? It helps to deal with it and at the same time it’s great creatively.
BO: What is the process of making the song look like? How long did it take?
Dafna: As soon as the breakup happened, I pretty much wrote and recorded the song like in one night because I had that idea for the change up that night. After that it took me about two weeks or maybe even a month to finalize everything and have it mixed well. Most of the writing and recording of this song took place in like a day.
BO: One day, wow! Did you work alone on the song? Did someone else work on it?
Dafna: I did most of it alone. I played a MIDI drum track, but I wanted live drums. So for the drums, I used Fiverr to pay someone to do it. I sent them what I had and planned and she sent it back to me pretty quickly.
BO: What is your favorite lyric line?
Dafna: Probably I thought you’d be the album, but you’re barely a song.
BO: Oh, yeah, I love this one too. It sits so well. And also like imagining when he would listen to the song and be like Oh man, I’m not an album, I’m barely a song.
Dafna: Yeah, after I wrote that song, I was like I don’t think I can ever write anything more about this guy.
BO: Where’s the perfect place to be for listening to the singer for the first time?
Dafna: Either in your room alone with good headphones, or in the car where you can jam out to it. Anywhere where you have room to move.
BO: Is there a music video to it?
Dafna: Yeah, I’m actually in the process of editing that right now. It should be out next week. I got a 360° camera. My dad and my friend Carson helped me set up a little set in the garage. Pretty much I had the idea two weeks ago and then my dad was like Oh, maybe you should really do that. He helped a lot with setting it up and Carson is very technical, so he helped with the technical stuff. I’m excited.
BO: What is the concept of it?
Dafna: Since it’s a 360° video, I’m pretty much cloned. I’m on the drums, on bass and sing as well. The set is built up like some kind of a party that I’m throwing. And I have balloons that say Happy 4 Days.
BO: Love this! Any honorable mentions you want to make?
Dafna: One of my friends, Lando Burch. He was super helpful during the process of making the song because he gave a lot of feedback and stuff for the mix. He’s great, I really appreciate him. Also, like always a shout out to my parents.
BO: If you’d have to put the song on a playlist with five other songs, what would they be?
