Deza is one of the best female producers & artists I have seen and discovered in the music industry. There is just something so refreshing and pop in her production skills that it makes every song she touches become a banger. And so is FUCVS (intro) one! With the clever & stunning idea to make the Internet sing the first lines of the song because she was too sick to actually sing at that time, she shines out in a bright and 100% deserved way.
I was so thrilled when I saw on her IG that it would drop this month! And in general, I can’t wait to dance & scream to all these upcoming bops from her in my bedroom
FUCVS (intro) is out everywhere & you should definitely stream the hell out of it!!
First, read my interview with legend Deza!
Bonnie Orbison: Introduce yourself a bit :)
Deza: Hi!! I’m Deza, a poetic pop artist, songwriter, and producer. I’m from Houston Texas, but currently live in Los Angeles. I’m published by RX Songs and Emily Warren’s publishing company, Under Warrenty!
BO: What is the title of your upcoming song and when does it come out?
Deza: My upcoming single is titled FUCVS (intro), and it drops January 28th!!
BO: Does the title have a special meaning and what inspired the track?
Deza: You know, I feel kinda bad about this title cause I’m sure CVS generally is kind, ahahaha. But last year, I was ridiculously sick. I was pretty sure I had strep, and had gone to a CVS desperate for a strep test & some antibiotics. I actually went to two, on two days, got rejected by both of them both times. Obviously my next course of action was to cry on the spot in that CVS. I just felt deliriously out of my wits and so beyond frustrated, being in the middle of a big life transition and also feeling so sick. That feeling is pervasive through the whole track – the anxiety, the burn out, the weird kind of manic high you get from being so over everything.
BO: What did the process of making this song look like? How long did it take?
Deza: Like I said – I was super sick, and super anxious. I had this itch to make something, but since my voice was trashed from the sickness, I wasn’t gonna be able to sing like I normally do. So, I did the next best thing – I started producing a beat that felt like my brain, and then found a robot voice online to speak for me. Once I kind of nailed down what I wanted her to say, I started tying the threads together. The first time I posted it to instagram was actually the day after I had started the beat. And I think it was a month later that I decided it needed some of my personal vocal on it, so, once I recovered, I wrote and recorded that gang vocal tag you hear at the end. All in all, it came together pretty quick and stayed true to the original vision from the day I created it!
BO: Who worked with you on the song?
Deza: My good friend Alton Sato helped me tidy and beef up the production! I had the song finished, but knew it needed the final 10% to kind of take it over the edge, and so he did that.
BO: What is your favorite lyric line from it?
Deza: I love the “can I get new lungs” line, honestly. The idea of replacing parts of you, swapping it out, starting new kinda encompasses the entire concept for me.
BO: Where is the perfect place to be for listening to the single for the first time?
Deza: This is such a great question – I’d say midnight in your car down the freeway. Or in your bedroom, eyes closed, headphones.
BO: Is there a music video to it? If yes, when will it be released?
Deza: Yes, it drops January 29th!
BO: What is the concept of the video?
Deza: So, the entirety of City Sickness is a storyline of love/life/career/Los Angeles, and FUCVS kicks us off as scene 1. The story begins with me and Discoball Man (aka the projection of my partner), laying in bed watching me, Deza, in a Genius-esque video. The idea is – sick, I’m tired, and I’m kinda losing it trying to keep up with this career. You see this kind of dissolution of my mental state as the song and video progresses.
BO: Who directed it? Who worked on it?
Deza: Walker Edelman directed it! He’s incredible. Patrick Naughter was our director of Photography, Molly Leach was 1st Assistant Director, and Kevin Cutrara was 1st Assistant Camera.
BO: Do you star in it? Who else?
Deza: I do! The other key role is Discoball Man, played in this video by James Rich.
BO: How long did it take it to shoot?
Deza: What’s fun is we knocked this out in about a day, everything included. We went back and added the initial scene you see just for context, but the Genius-esque video and the parking lot were both shot in the same day!
BO: Any honorable mentions you wanna make?
Deza: Michelle Ruoff, my manager, for keeping me together during the shoot and helping breathe life into this entire project.
BO: If you’d have to put the song on a playlist with 5 other songs, which would they be?
Deza: This question is so hard! Maybe …
BO: Thank you so much for answering these questions!
Deza: Thank you so much for asking them!! It’s been so fun.
