** this blog post came out on February 9, 2022 via the old website**
I discovered Matilda Cole on my fyp on TikTok. Funnily, I just came back from a weird meet-up with my father and his partner, realizing once more in my life as a child of divorce, I’ll never see my parents showing their love in public. Sobbing, I listened to ‘Camden’ for many weeks and recommended it to everyone who wanted to have a great song to scream out all your pain.
More than happy and honored I feel now to present you this interview of Matilda Cole for this music blog.
“Again” is out on all streaming platforms now & def a new song on my on-repeat playlist
Here she is: legend Matilda Cole.
Bonnie Orbison: Introduce yourself a bit : )
Matilda Cole: Okay so! I’m Matilda Cole, I’m nineteen, I’m from Brighton and I’m an artist/songwriter. I’ve been releasing music professionally for about a year, and I’m halfway through my second EP at the moment! I also write for other artists, so recently I’ve been in a lot of sessions writing songs for cool new people. My whole life was upturned by the pandemic but somehow I ended up doing my dream job!
BO: What is the title of your upcoming single and when does it come out?
Matilda: It’s called Again and it comes out on February 9th! Which is today if you’re reading this on the day Bonnie releases it!
BO: Describe ‘Again’ in 3 words.
Matilda: Errrm … okay ‘love as infatuation’.
BO: Does the title have a special meaning?
Matilda: It’s a very simple title because the song was born from a very simple idea – letting someone hurt you over and over because you’re supposedly in love with them. The song describes a cyclical relationship, where it’s happening again and again and again, so that seemed like the natural title.
BO: What inspired the track? What is the song about?
Matilda: Sonically this track is a bit more pop than the others on the EP, and is probably closest to the songs on the first EP. I wanted to keep an element of that in, and have a fun song you could dance to! Although the meaning is more introspective, it’s hidden in a fun instrumental. I like that contradiction.
BO: What did the process of making this song look like and how long did it take?
Matilda: It was all done on zoom! i wrote it a long long time ago in the depths of lockdown, when i was doing a lot of zoom sessions. The producer (Doc Daniel) was in LA and I was in Brighton, so we ended up working till like 3am because of the time difference. The whole thing was written, recorded and produced remotely which is definitely not what I’m used to – but was so cool to see come to life. me and doc have never met each other but now we have a fully formed song that we created. weird huh?
BO: What is your favourite lyric line from it?
Matilda: It changes – but for now it’s ‘i love you all the time, and i’m so sick of it’. That feeling of thinking about someone so much that it’s annoying is very close to my heart hahah.
BO: Where is the perfect place to be for listening to the single for the first time?
Matilda: I would say in a car after a fight with your boyfriend. Very loud, you’re very angry and crying a bit but simultaneously dancing along to the song.
BO: Is there a music video to it?
Matilda: YES!!! The music video is probably my favourite thing I’ve ever made. it’s gonna be a week or so after the single – but it’s worth the wait. The concept is a 60s stylised love story set in this gorgeous house. The costumes are incredible!!! It was directed by Amy Becker-Burnett who’s done all my music videos. She is quite literally a genius, and I’m the luckiest girl to be able to work with someone so talented so early on in my career – she is incredible and brought everything to life better than I could’ve dreamed. I star as kind of the omniscient narrator of the song, and then two fantastic models Issey and Lewis act out the love story. They were perfect. We shot two music videos in two days which was a bit mad, but one of the best experiences ever.
BO: Any honourable mentions you wanna make?
Matilda: An honourable mention would be to my best friend Joe Puxley, who also shot all the covers and BTS from the music video. He’s magnificently talented and I wouldn’t be anywhere near as fulfilled creatively if it wasn’t for him!
BO: If you’d have to put the song on a playlist with 5 other songs, which would they be?
Again is out everywhere now! Stream it on your favourite platform!
