Last week felt turbulent and changing from up to down, from high to low and back up high, chaotic messes in the world, my mind and my writing desk. Music has proved once again to be a grateful and caring friend to me. I looked forward to writing about the latest tracks that caught my heart and I am excited to be back with my podcast episodes as well!✨
honorable mentions: EPs & LPs
“1989 (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift
“One for Jackie” by Rett Madison
“Comedy & Tragedy: Act 2” by Catie Turner
“Suntub” by ML Buch
“Chaos & Commotion” by SOFY
“Do Things For Me” by Rachel Mintz
“The Hype” by Sigrid
If you take a listen, you can hear the unique orchestral and soundscapes of today’s music. Let’s dive into it:
Automatic Stop by CATT
My absolute favourite song of last week’s new music releases is CATT’s Automatic Stop. As a Strokes admirer, I’m looking forward to the whole tribute album (also Oracle Sister’s cover of Under Control?!). The instrumentals lets one drift into hopeful dreamscapes and I suddenly wrote confession letters to ex-friends and lovers in my mind. What for a legendary cover of an already great song!
she wanted him, he wanted me
Lost Cowboy by Elle Coves
Well, of course the gal who always greets everyone with Howdy!, has a Substack called
and wears her cowboy hat whenever she pleases will put a song about a lost cowboy in her Top 5 picks. Honestly, everything about this song makes me bop along my head and scream in the chorus to keep the cowboys out my mind. The music video as well has deserved its own sentences like what for a piece of art was created. Tipping on my cowboy hat truly🤠this is not the place or time to be back in my mind / I am not your highway / or some shelter from the desert storm
Mythological Man by Coco
When I awoke a week ago and pressed play on the single of groovy Dreampop band Coco, it felt like my whole world surrounding me would condenses into a big fluffy cloud and I would float over my bed. The lyrics calling for acceptance and understanding, the light drums filling in breaks between melodies and harmonies are just astonishingly beautiful. A true daydreaming anthem.
gazing at the stars in a lonely paradise / how can no one realize he does everything right?
Now That We Don’t Talk (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift
I didn’t grow up as a Swiftie, it took me years in high school to listen through her albums and only last year with the release of “Midnights” it clicked. Excitedly, I watched people react to the anticipated Taylor’s Version of 1989 and I almost got jealous not having been a fan back in 2014. Moreover, I experience listening and exploring the lyrics and vibes from 1989 in Taylor’s Version style and that is something fans back from 2014 will not have the privilege to feel. So I think we’re even :)
and from the outside / it looks like you’re tryin’ lives on / I miss the old ways / you didn't have to change
Lipstick by Rett Madison
We’ve started last week’s picks with a groovy 1970s-esque cover of the Strokes and now we’re closing it with an original song off Rett Madison’s sophomore album One for Jackie. The album in total is a masterpiece and needs to be listened perfectly from beginning to end without shuffling or skipping (sounds like I need to get the physical vinyl record of it). The song-writing skills in song no.4 on the album particularly make me feel like reading a diary that I’m not supposed to read and this is exactly what’s so brilliant about it.
now that I’m falling in love / I can only think of how you weren’t treated right
Re-listen to this episode of ours:
In honour of BAILEN releasing a live and raw version of their song BRCA (Nothing Takes Me Down) in honor of breast cancer awareness month, we’re recommending the podcast episode Bonnie and Daniel Bailen have recorded three Summers ago.
This is all for this week! Last week’s new music releases definitely served for everyone something onto their plates. I wish y’all a great week :) ⭐️🌞⭐️ xo, Bonnie Orbison
